The Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb
A Pair of Left Shoes - Reality check in Eastern Europe
The exhibition is a result of cooperation between Museum of Contempoaray Art, Zagreb, and the Kunstmuseum of Bochum. The curatorial concept is signed by the senior curator of our Museum and its vice-director, Tihomir Milovac. It debates on the situation in the so-called transition and post-transition countries as a reality check transposed into artistic paradigms that are different from those in the West.
Seventeen internationally renowned artists and art groups from the region of Eastern Europe will exhibit in the 2000 square metres of Bochum art museum. Some artists do not live in the region, but their work focuses on the Eastern-European reality. At the exhibition opening, IRWIN art group will issue passports of the "NSK State in Time." During the exhibition, which will close on 2 August, several events from the fields of music, performance, and theatre will take place at the museum.
Parallel to "A Pair of Left Shoes" project, we are presenting an exhibition on "Museum within the Museum," authored by the director of MSU, Snježana Pintarić, through which the Museum will present its new building on photographs made by distinguished photographer Jasenko Rasol and a selection from our rich Poster Collection. The selection includes works of graphic design produced by Ivan Picelj, Mihajlo Arsovski, Boris Bućan, Dalibor Martinis, and Igor Kuduz for the Museum's programme from its foundation until the present day.
It should be noted that, despite the fact that our Museum has been actively preparing for the forthcoming transfer to the new building, it has never interrupted its exhibition activities in Croatia and abroad. Thus, we have recently presented the project for the new building and the work of three doyens of Croatian modernism (Bakić, Picelj, and Srnec) in Paris, at the gallery of the Association Le Pont Neuf.
The most recent project of our Museum has resulted from an invitation of Kunstmuseum Bochum and the "Europäische Partnerschaften 2009/2010" project, and is sponsored by the Kunststiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen and Goethe-Institut.
This joint project of European museums will significantly intensify our cooperation and information exchange. It was launched by the artistic foundation of Nordrhein-Westfalen and Goethe Institut as an introduction to the events of 2010, when several cities of the Ruhr region will become the "cultural capitals of Europe."
