Reincarnation of Holy Orlanis the title of ORLAN 's project from the nineties. It includes a series of aesthetic surgeries that radically changed her appearance after the models of famous female figures from the history of art. As part of her manifesto of “carnal art”, these operations were carefully recorded, directed, and screened live in international exhibition institutions like Pompidou Centre or Sandra Gehring Gallery in New York. ORLAN’s aim was to achieve the ideal of female beauty through a series of operations, as described by male artists throughout the past centuries. Thus ORLAN planned to have a chin like Botticelli’s Venus, a nose of Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Psyche, the lips of Boucher’s Europe, the eyes of Diana as depicted by adherents of the Fontainebleau School, and the forehead of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The artist has not chosen these figures for their beauty, but for the story connected with them. Diana was selected as the leader of women, Mona Lisa as the standard of beauty (or non-beauty), Psyche for the frailty and vulnerability of the soul, Venus for her sensuality, and Europe for her brave view of the future. Many feminists called ORLAN an opponent of the feminist movement, because she accepted aesthetic surgery, celebrated manhood, and emphasized that her identity was not exclusively female, but nomadic, changeable, and mutant. ORLAN answered that her work was a struggle against the inborn, inevitable, programmed, DNK, Nature, and God.
The exhibition "Love for Risk" presents artworks from the collections of as many as fifteen French museums of contemporary art. The artists participating at this exhibition, thirty four of them, are international art scene stars, personalities intriguing for the media: they constantly live and create their art on the edge, risking not only their reputation, but their lives as well. They do not hesitate to shock; they reveal “black holes” in the society and politics, they do not respect myths and taboos and make us aware of our delusions and misconceptions. The works of these artists tell us that art is the last oasis of deliberate and calculated risk, because everyday life is so insecure that we resort to every kind of security, even illusory.
The artists represented at the exhibition are: Agnès Accorsi, Bas Jan Ader, Francis AlAlÿs, Leonardo Boscani, Larry Clark, Jocelyn Cottencin, Elie Cristiani, Simone Decker, Marcel Dinahet, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller, Christian Jankowski, Žilvinas Kempinas, Natacha Lesueur, Claude Lévêque, Gordon Matta-Clark, Paul McCarthy, Aernout Mik, Anita Molinero, Moser & Schwinger, David Nebreda, ORLAN , Steven Parrino, Lucien Pelen, Gaël Peltier, Sigmar Polke, Adrien Porcu, Julien Prévieux, Claude Rutault, Alain Séchas, Atelier Van Lieshout, Jean-Luc Verna, Clemens von Wedemeyer, and Erwin Wurm.
The exhibition has been jointly organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb and Platform – an association of French regional funds for contemporary art, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb City Office for Education, Culture, and Sport, French Institute in Zagreb, French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and French Ministry of Culture and Communications.
