Presentation of the Project will be held on November 15 and 16 2013 at 6pm in NO Gallery.
Visitors will be able to see three documentary movies about the first and second edition of the Project, 30 photographs of the artworks that are on display in Atomic War Command and Basak Senova and Branko Franceschi will talk about the artworks and the Project Book. Project D-0 ARK Underground in the last four years has been recognized as a promoter / initiator of the regional cultural values and was rightly declared as a Cultural Event of Europe for year 2011. Project received the patronage of UNESCO for it's second edition in 2013. During visit to the Project Biennale, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, emphasized that Project Biennial became a symbol of the power of culture, to build bridges between people and thus presents a place of dialogue and openness.
Electronic and international TV media (Al Jazeera Balkans, CNN, RAI UNO, TRT, HRT, FOX News, RTS...) and many other newspapers wrote extensively about the Project (New York Times, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Huriet Daily, Associated Press, Washington Post...) a particular importance and attention for the Project was given by art journals (ART FORUM, Metropolism, Flash Art...).
Atomic War Command was built from 1953 until 1979. Cost for the construction of this object was 4.600.000,00 US Dollars. Object consists of 12 connected blocks and occupies a space of 6.500 square meters. Originally designed as an atomic shelter an object of great historical significance, the context of this artistic project has more importance, providing the possibility of a new, non-traditional approach to the promotion of culture and contemporary art. Atomic War Command represents an important toponym for exploration of our common cultural and historical heritage. Many monuments, especially those who symbolize the recent political systems were destroyed during and after the last war. Object ARK is a unique exhibition space, outside of the traditional framework of arts, in psychological and intellectual sense.
The purpose of the Project D-0 ARK Underground is to protect this invaluable object from decay and, simultaneously, to lend a new life to the atomic shelter with energy that art brings along. Ultimately, this object should be transformed into the Museum of Contemporary Art D-0 ARK.
The first edition of the Project was realized with partner countries of Republic of Serbia and Montenegro.
Selectors of the first edition were Branislav Dimitrijević (Belgrade) and Petar Cuković (Podgorica). There were 44 participating artists on the first edition of the Project Biennial of Contemporary Art.
In organization of the second edition of the Project Biennial of Contemporary Art D-0ARK Underground partner countries were Republic of Turkey and Republic of Croatia. The curators of the second edition were Basak Senova and Branko Franceschi.
Biennale Directorate decided that selected artists would be from the region and those from other countries in the ratio of 50:50. In the second edition of the Project Biennial there were 35 participating artists from 19 countries.
After two editions of the Project in Atomic shelter, permanently on display are 80 artworks of 68 artists from 28 countries. The fact that even 57 artists who participated in the Project Biennial were representing their countries on Venice Biennial speaks enough about the quality of artists and the artworks that are on display in the Bunker. Croatian artists that are represented in the permanent display are Edo Murtić, Dalibor Martinis, Renata Poljak, Nemanja Cvijanović, Davor Mišković, Dario Šolman, Igor Grubić, Tina Gverović and Vlatka Horvat.
After the opening of the second edition of the Project Biennial of Contemporary Art Project Book was published and first presentation of the Project Biennial and Project Book launch was in UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe in Palazzo Zorzi during 55th Venice Biennial. Project Book, presents on more than 250 pages the artworks that are permanently on display in Atomic War Command and also shows the four-year work of the Project Biennial Directorate.
Second presentation of the Project Biennial and Project Book launch was in Florence in Villa Romana, on July 7th 2013 with curators of the second edition of the Project Biennial.
In very well known Istanbul Cultural Institution SALT Beyoğlu, in program Who’s in town?, on September 18th 2013, before the opening of the 13th Istanbul Biennial, in front of big auditorium, curators of the second edition of the Project D-0 ARK Underground Basak Senova and Branko Franceschi presented the Project.
