Julije Knifer: Uncompromising, a retrospective

Thousands of visitors on the exhibition opening!

First, the long-awaited retrospective of one of the most prominent Croatian painter of the second half of the 20th century Julije Knifer "Uncompromising", was opened on Saturday, September 20th, 2014. More than a thousand visitors witnessed a rare and important event, lowering the artist's large canvas "Arbeitsprozess" from Tuebingen in 1975 (from the Dacić family collection, Tübingen), on the north side of MSU in the street which bears the name of Julije Knifer.

The MSU retrospective will encompass a selection of key works from the MSU's in-house collection will be joined at the exhibition with works borrowed from numerous private and public collections, including some of the world's leading collections of modern and contemporary art – Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou and Geneva's MAMCO among others. To be exhibited along with his early work preceding the meander are many drawings/sketches for paintings and murals, documentary photographs – including those of performances less widely known to the broader public, and his authentic (diary) notes – a verbal extension of the contemplation of human existence embodied in the symbol of the meander.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive bilingual (Croatian/ English) edition of the catalogue (348 pages), with texts written by prominent Croatian and foreign art historians. The introductory text was written by catalogue editor Radmila Iva Janković. Zvonko Maković wrote an exhaustive preface about Julije Knifer’s work. The authors of previously published texts about Knifer’s work are: Igor Zidić, Ljerka Mifka, Ješa Denegri, Krešimir Purgar (interview with Julije Knifer) Jean-Claude Marcadé, Arnauld Pierre, Hubert Besacier and Leila Topić (interview with Ana Knifer, the artist’s daughter). The catalogue and visual identity were designed by Igor Kuduz.
