Siegfried Zielinski: Media thinking and media acting as expanded hermeneutics

Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, Thursday, January 31st 2019

Siegfried Zielinski, one of the most inspiring media philosophers and curators of contemporary art, also an co-editor with Peter Weibel, with David Irrigang, of an impressive Flusseriana, An Intellectual Toolboox with 250 Flusser’s lemmas, exhibitions as Without Firm Ground - Vilém Flusser and the Arts (ZKM, 2015) and director of the Flusser’s Archive, will introduce his own work on the deep time of the media and his arts and media praxes. The lecture will include, in the words of Siegfried Zielinski, “a short introduction to my own work as an anarchaeologist and variantologist of the arts & media and a presentation of some essentials from the work of Vilém Flusser. Regarding the latter I shall focus on his idea of an operational anthropology of human civilisation and his concept of art & image.”

With the lecture by Siegfried Zielinski “Media Thinking and Media Acting as Expanded Hermeneutics”, on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at 19.00 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, the last programme of the twelfth edition of Film Mutations: Festival of Invisible Cinema, we’re also announcing the thirteenth edition of our project in an early fall, with expanded focus on the media thinking by Vilém Flusser. Flusser’s ontology and nomadology of images, which remains mostly outside of filmology, shares reflections of the past-century’s exilic philosophy of film, theatre and culture by Walter Benjamin, Bertold Brecht, Rudolf Arnheim, Siegfried Kracauer. Flusser’s essential work Towards a philosophy of photography (1983), his only book translated in Croatian, creates close affinities with Benjamin’s and Kracauer’s theses on photography as a decisive gesture of the technical images and a prototype of the programmed post-historic world.

As part of the lecture we will show a short film by Harun Farocki Catch Phrases – Catch Images. A Conversation with Vilém Flusser(1986.) in which Farocki and Flusser are decoding the front page of the newspaper Bild-Zietung, the way images and text are connected, and what images on the front page mean.

In addition, we will show excerpt of the interview with Siegfried Zielinsky about Farocki’s Flusser film, as well as a part of Flusser's lecture in Budapest, from collaborative DVD project of the Archive Vilém Flusser, Universität der Künste in Berlin (Siegfried Zielinski) and C³ Center for Culture and Communication Foundation in Budapest (Miklós Peternák).

Siegfried Zielinskiis Professor of Media Archaeology and Techno-Culture at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee (CH), honorary doctor and professor of the Budapest University of Arts; until 2016 he was chair of media theory/archaeology & variantology of media at Berlin University of the Arts, and director of the Vilém Flusser Archive. He was founding rector (1994–2000) of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and rector of the Karlsruhe University of Arts & Design. Zielinski has published numerous books and essays mainly focusing on the archaeology of the Media. In close collaboration with Peter Weibel he is also a curator of large format exhibitions at the ZKM Karlsruhe, such as Without Film Ground - Vilém Flusser and the Arts, Allah’s Automata (both 2015), Art in Movement – 100 Master Pieces of Art with and through Media (2018).
