Otto Piene (Laasphe, Germany, 1928)
Smoked Picture
1961
oil / canvas
67 cm x 93 cm
In his smoked pictures he uses a natural element – fire – as the principal shaping means. In the artistic process, in which he sets the canvas above the smoke of a candle or a petroleum lamp, fire and smoke – along with the artist’s intervention – assume an active role in the creation of the painting.
