The small painting bearing the enigmatic name Pafama (1922) is the first known abstract composition in Croatian art. At the time of Pafama’s creation, its author, Josip Seissel, used the pseudonym Jo Klek. Among the most important paintings of that period is doubtlessly Pafama, constructed on the postulates of suprematism, proclaimed by the Russian avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich, liberated of any associations with the material world and reduced to primary geometrical forms.
