Many motifs, although they appear staged and theatrical, refer to actual events. Using the principle of montage and re-appropriation of paintings from Slovenian art heritage – including social-realist kitsch, but also the motifs of performances of the rock-group Laibach – the IRWINs have re-articulated and capitalized their past. Combining these images with modernist icons, above all with Malevich’s emblematic cross and square, they constantly oscillate between two poles – political usage and aesthetic, disinterested contemplation.
