Boris Bućan
Mondrian and Duchamp, 1975
painted chess board, 16 black figures
36.8 cm x 36.8 cm
This playful work was created in 1975 as one in Bućan's series of “spontaneous artistic reactions,”but actually it re-thinks the foundations of visual art, its contexts, meanings, and consequences. In the work Mondrian and Duchamp, the author expresses his special self-ironic detachment. By taking the liberty to freely choose and use the names of artists from the recent and older history of art, Bućan places them in the context of a temporary common exhibition and re-arranges art puzzles, supplementing them with a reduced “user’s manual”.
