Jimmie Durham (Arkansas, USA, 1940)

Written in Stone, 2003

Durham takes stone away from monumentality and restores its primary function as a tool. Sometimes this is a tool necessary for the “barbaric” act of destruction, like in some of his video-works, while in other instances, like in the exhibition-installation Inscribed in Stone at the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art (2003), he uses two stone plates for “ironing a shirt”.
