Discover the charm of Filipino holiday traditions by joining our Parol-Making Workshop! Taking place on Saturday, September 20 at 4 PM, this workshop is one of several events in which the Filipino community presents its culture and customs as part of Andreja Kulunčić’s exhibition “To Make the World a Better Place.” A parol is a star-shaped lantern that symbolizes hope, light, and the spirit of Christmas in the Philippines. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn more about the cultural significance of the parol and create their own lantern using traditional materials such as bamboo, colorful paper, and string. No prior experience is needed—this workshop is designed for children ages 7 and up, families, and students interested in hands-on creativity and cultural learning.
Facilitator and parol maker Michelle Omejec will guide participants step by step through the entire process, from building the frame to decorating the lantern with vibrant designs.
Participants can expect:
• A brief introduction to the history and meaning of the parol in the Filipino-Indonesian pavilion at MSU
• Step-by-step instructions for making a traditional 5-point bamboo star lantern
• All materials provided
• A joyful and creative atmosphere that fosters cultural appreciation
